poem laburnum top

Hi friends

Whenever I hear the engine of a car revving up I am reminded of the poem 'The Laburnum Top'by Ted Hughes & the engine mentioned in this poem.Iwould like to share my thoughts about it.

ABOUT THE POET

Ted Hughes:Edward James Hughes.English poet & writer.Born on 17th Aug.1930 & died on 28th Oct 1998.Married to American poet Sylvia Plath,who committed suicide in 1963,at the age of 30.

ABOUT THE POEM

The poem is about a gold finch that enters the dense branches of a laburnum tree. It is then that the tree becomes full of the activities of life. The goldfinch family is kept in activity by the laburnum tree. They come to the tree, relax, feed, sing, move,& dance & then fly away from it .Therefore the laburnum tree works as an angine for her family.
The use of the word ‘engine’ in the poem
When we start an engine a humming sound can be heard & there is a vibration in the air. The same effect is to be found in this poem, the goldfinch family twitches, chirrups & starts the machine of music. The laburnum tree makes them sing. Hence it is called the ‘engine’ of her family.
